        848 Naval Air Squadron

848 Naval Air Squadron provides trained pilots, aircrewmen and engineers and technicians for the two front-line Sea King squadrons of the Commando Helicopter Force. Each year upwards of 200 qualified personnel pass out of the Yeovilton-based squadron and into its sister units 845 and 846, allowing them to continue their operations around the world. Aircrew and maintainers receive military and amphibious training and are taught how to operate Sea King helicopters from the deck of a warship… or from a field, clearing or base ashore. Our squadron is expected to train up 60 pilots and aircrewmen – the latter are either Royal Navy ratings or Royal Marines drawn from the ranks – and 150 maintainers, the technicians and engineers who look after everything on a Sea King from the engines to the avionics and weapons. In addition to our training mission, the squadron is regularly committed around the UK on support of maritime operations and commando training.

        848 Naval Air Squadron HISTORY

TRACK THE HISTORY OF SHIPS NAMED 848 Naval Air Squadron
        • World War II

848 Naval Air Squadron enjoys a proud history which goes back to the bitterest days of World War 2. The first incarnation of 848 began in 1943 with a dozen Grumman Avenger torpedo bombers which saw action in support of the Normandy landings and later in the final stages of the conflict with Japan aboard HMS Formidable, including the Okinawa campaign and strikes against the Japanese main islands in the last weeks of the war.

        • Anti-Terrorist Operations in Malaysia

With the Rising Sun defeated, the squadron disbanded. It rematerialised seven years later as the Royal Navy’s first operational helicopter squadron flying Whirlwinds. In this three-year incarnation, 848 supported anti-terrorist/insurgent operations in Malaysia.

        • Kuwait, Brunei and Borneo

The third phase in the life of the squadron began in 1958 as a specialist amphibious warfare squadron. It served with HMS Bulwark during the Kuwait emergency of 1961 and later in the jungles of Brunei and Borneo.

        • In the Falklands

Disbanded in 1976, 848 was quickly re-formed in 1982 to provide flights for three Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships dispatched to the Falklands, plus the Atlantic Conveyor; the latter was sunk by an Exocet missile, destroying the ship’s flight (no 848 personnel were lost, however).

        • The First Gulf War

With the Falklands liberated, 848 stood down again… only to be recommissioned with Sea Kings in 1991 to support operations in the first Gulf War.

        • Training Role

Again with the war over, the squadron disbanded, but it returned in 1995 to assume the training role it continues to perform today.
