Air Stations

The Royal Navy’s Air Stations – Culdrose in Cornwall and Yeovilton in Somerset – are among the busiest airfields in the UK. They are home to the Fleet Air Arm’s front-line and training squadrons, hundreds of aircraft and helicopters, and thousands of personnel – air and ground crew – plus civilian staff.

  • Culdrose fliers light the Olympic torch after historic mission to Land’s End19/05/2012

    Naval fliers of 771 Naval Air Squadron today lit the Olympic torch after an historic flight in Cornwall.Their Sea King delivered the flame from Culdrose to Land’s End where it ignited the first of 8,000 torches just after 7am to begin an 8,000-mile relay around the UK.

  • Naval fliers perfect formation for Diamond Jubilee flypast18/05/2012

    Royal Navy helicopter crews have been practising alongside their Army and RAF comrades in the skies over Hampshire today as they make final preparations for tomorrow’s Diamond Jubilee flypast. Fleet Air Arm Lynx, Merlins and Sea Kings will be in the first of seven distinct formations of aircraft past and present flying over Windsor at 12.26pm to honour the Queen’s 60-year reign.

  • Pirates’ Fiery End as Westminster Blasts Their Boats Out of the Water16/05/2012

    HMS Westminster smashed the actions of three pirate groups in a fortnight – sending the boats to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.The Portsmouth-based warship treated the skiffs to a Viking funeral, blasting them out of the water with her guns and those of her Merlin helicopter.

    Gold medallist Sally Gunnell and TV presenter Alex Jones were put through their paces by RNAS Culdrose as the Cornish air station gears up for the arrival of the Olympic flame from Greece. It’s due to touch down around 7.30pm on Friday to considerable fanfare – and it’s just been announced that England star David Beckham will be among the big names on the special jet delivering it.

    The Navy’s No.1 helicopter display team, the Black Cats, are ready to perform for the Diamond Jubilee air show season after the head of the Fleet Air Arm approved their display.The two Lynx – instantly recognisable thanks to the distinctive cat emblems painted on their fuselage – will perform at more than a dozen shows around the UK between the end of this month and mid October.
