Merchant Navy Liaison Voyages

Royal Navy and Royal Marines/Merchant Navy Liaison Voyage Scheme

The aim of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines / Merchant Navy Liaison Voyage Scheme (MNLV) is to foster good relations between the RN and MN, by providing RN and RM officers with experience of Merchant Navy operations (and vice versa) and encouraging Merchant Navy liaison in defence matters. The scheme enables serving officers to take passage in selected merchant ships and for MN personnel to embark in HM Ships.

Voyages can last from one week to three months, in a variety of vessels, including cargo, ro-ro, container, passenger ships and fast craft. Some voyages involve joining and leaving abroad.

The scheme applies to regular officers of the rank of Commander or equivalent and below, but can include others in special circumstances.

DE&S and PJHQ Officers of all services are eligible to participate subject to costs being borne by their parent organisations.

Participants require Commanding Officer's / Line Manager's and Career Manager's approval.

Not all applications can be met. Successful applicants are required to attend a briefing on the scheme given by the MNLO, at the MWS and produce a Voyage Report with 14 days of return.

Voyage Reports are required.

The scheme is administered by the Merchant Navy Liaison Officer (MNLO)  Lt Cdr Roger Leather RNR at the Maritime Trade and Reserves Training Unit (MTRTU), Maritime Warfare School, HMS Collingwood on behalf of the Director Naval Staff.
