In 1999 the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force (CHF), alongside RAF support helicopters and the Army Air Corps, became part of the newly formed Joint Helicopter Command (JHC).
Joint Helicopter Command
Joint Helicopter Command (JHC) is a tri-service organisation uniting military helicopters of the British Armed Forces for command and coordination purposes.
JHC units continue to belong to their parent service and maintain their respective single service ethos; however, they now come under the Operational Command of HQ Land, pooling their respective specialist capabilities in order to provide a formidable source of aviation assets to support ground operations. This concept was fully tested in March 2003 during the conflict in Iraq, when RAF Chinook aircraft supplemented 845 and 847 NAS in the largest amphibious assault since Suez.
The four Naval Air Squadrons of Commando Helicopter Force provide JHC with core knowledge and expertise in mountain warfare, arctic warfare and amphibiosity.
