Combined Task Force (CTF) 151

Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 is a multinational task force established to conduct counter-piracy operations throughout the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) area of responsibility. Their mission is to actively deter, disrupt and suppress piracy in order to protect global maritime security and secure freedom of navigation for the benefit of all nations.

Area of Responsibility (AOR)

CTF 151 operates in the Gulf of Aden and off the eastern coast of Somalia. There is no defined eastern limit to the AOR; it is dependent on the activities and operational area of the pirates. One attack has occurred 1,000 nautical miles off the Somalia coast, and another south of the Seychelles.

The task force works in close co-operation with other naval forces engaged in anti-piracy operations in the area, which include the EU Naval Force Somalia (also known as OPERATION ATALANTA), the NATO task force (running OPERATION ALLIED PROTECTOR) and units from individual countries.

OPERATION ATALANTA is also tasked with protecting United Nations World Food Programme Shipping delivering humanitarian food aid to Somalia.

Area of Strategic Importance

This area is a vital artery of world trade that includes the main shipping routes from the Far East to Europe and the US with over 33,000 shipping movements, including over one third of the world’s oil passing through the AOR, each year.
