Rugby Union Inter-Command Competition - Round 1

image

DATE: 16 January 2013
TIME: 14:00
VENUE: Fort Southwick, Portsmouth

Portsmouth Command v Scotland Command

This year’s Royal Navy inter-command competition will be contested from this week, concluding in a final in late March.

Teams will be playing for the Inverdale Trophy, named after a former Royal Navy Surgeon Captain John Inverdale. A rugby man himself, he was committed to both Plymouth’s Devonport Services and Portsmouth’s United Services clubs, where he not only played his rugby, but also took on various roles with the club committees. Captain John Inverdale was made a Life member of the Royal Navy Rugby Union in 1970.

It is hoped that the radio and television broadcaster John Inverdale, son of Captain John Inverdale, who works for the BBC and ITV covering sporting events will again be present at this years finals.

Last year’s final saw the battle between Naval Air Commands ‘Men of Air’ and the ‘Might’ of the Royal Marines.  In a closely fought battle and the final score 11-9 to the ‘Men of Air’, it enabled then to lift the trophy for the fourth time within a six years period.

Venue for the final will be Burnaby Road, Portsmouth or The Rectory in Plymouth, depending on the location of the two finalists.  BAE Systems, sponsors of the Royal Navy Rugby Union will be sponsoring this event.

The aim of this competition is to provide a competitive competition, allowing a player exposure to a higher standard of rugby than that of unit standard, thus creating a competitive players’ pathway.
