Royal Navy Policewoman Helps Capture Pirates31/01/2012
The past few days have seen a marked increase in the workload of RFA Fort Victoria’s “village bobby”, Leading Regulator Carol Morton-Harrowsmith.
Carol, age 37, originally from Edinburgh, is usually responsible for routine discipline matters at sea.
However, on Friday 13th January 2012, after the ship’s successful capture of 14 suspected Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean, Carol’s specialist skills were called to the fore.
As soon as the pirated dhow was secured by the Royal Marine boarding teams, Carol was the first person to embark in order to conduct crime scene investigation.
It was her unenviable task, amongst the filth and cockroaches on the dhow, to make sure that every shred of evidence was correctly marked, photographed and preserved for use in any future prosecution.
It also fell to her to oversee every aspect of the processing, searching and ongoing wellbeing of the suspected pirates, including the supervision of all their daily living activities and medical care.
“Initially I had to be firm with the suspected pirates,” said Carol
“But once they settled in and accepted my position of authority I was able to show them a more approachable side to my role.
"The conditions I had to work in on the dhow were challenging, to say the least, but it has been a professionally rewarding experience for both myself and my team. This is what we trained for. ”
