RFA Wave Knight ‘Waves’ Hello To Cruise Ship Oriana22/01/2012
On a beautiful Thursday morning, 19th January, Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Wave Knight met the P&O Cruises’ MV Oriana steaming at 23 knots on route to Muscat. Wave Knight is conducting anti-piracy and security patrols in the internationally recognised ‘Transit Corridor’ in the Gulf of Aden, north of Somalia. Only days early, Wave Knight, was involved in the rescue of 10 persons from a capsizing vessel of the Omani coast.
Wave Knight's presence and that of other coalition warships in the region is a clear sign to the 1700 passengers and 800 crew in the Oriana of the international effort to contain piracy and crime at sea. The passengers were hugely appreciative of the Wave Knight coming to say hello. The two ships passed just 600 yards apart in order that the passengers could get as close as possible.
Captain Chris Clarke, the Commanding Officer of Wave Knight, said
“…what a wonderful opportunity it was to meet such a fabulous ship this morning. There is a real sense of self-belief onboard in that we are making a demonstrable contribution to the safe passage of these, and other, vessels of the mercantile community. It is clear they are thankful for the work that the UK and others are putting into the maritime security effort.”
Before ‘signing off’ from the encounter, Wave Knight, paid a verbal salute by sounding the ship’s whistle. Oriana passengers were reported to be ‘over the moon’ with the photo opportunity at close quarters
