Somerset Sea Cadets And Anti Piracy Operations13/01/2012
Somerset Sea Cadets and guests were recently given a fascinating insight into the anti-piracy operations being conducted off the Horn of Africa by the Royal Navy and other national forces at the RNAS Yeovilton.
Commodore Paul Chivers OBE is of course well known as the Commanding Officer of RNAS Yeovilton, but his last appointment was the Chief of Staff to the Commander UK Maritime Forces when he was responsible for the EU operation to counter piracy off the coast of Somalia.
His presentation on such a topical subject was warmly received and appreciated by a very knowledgeable local audience, judging by a lively question session!.
The evening was arranged by the Somerset & Dorset Branch of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets and attended by around 100 generous supporters of the Sea Cadets and is their major fundraising event of the year.
The Sea Cadets then took to the stage and showed some film clips of their activities through the year, followed by a University Challenge style quiz testing the cadets on their knowledge of their unit – both teams achieved full marks!!
They are shown with Rear Admiral Chris Stanford, the Chairman of the Somerset and Dorset Branch of the Sea Cadets and Marine Society, Lord Lieutenant, Lady Gass and Commodore Paul Chivers OBE.
