A young Royal Navy Sailor has been awarded a Joint Force Support (Afghanistan) Commendation in recognition for his outstanding support to the Intelligence Exploitation Force during an operational tour in the Nahr-e Saraj area of the country.
Air Engineering Technician Wyn Russell Davies, a former pupil of Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones School in Amlwch, worked as a Biometric Support Advisor during his operational tour.
He was responsible for providing support and advice on all aspects of biometrics collection – essentially personal and physical information – in order to enable and enhance the exploitation of insurgent personnel and material.
On receiving his commendation for Distinguished Service, Russell said:
“I was just doing my job and it was one that I found interesting and challenging, but it is good to see that the Royal Navy receives recognition in Joint Service land-based operations.”
Lt Col Howard Nichol, Commanding Officer Intelligence Exploitation Force said:
“AET Davies displayed great initiative and energy whilst applying himself to his role as a Biometric Support Advisor.
"He can be justifiably proud of the very tangible part he played in ensuring that exploitation has become a major capability in the fight against insurgency.”
Russell received his Commendation from Commodore Paul Chivers OBE, the commanding officer of the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset, where Russell is currently based.
