HMS Dragon stars in TV railway series

HMS Dragon on BBC2's Great British Railway Journeys

23/04/2012

The Royal Navy’s newest warship will be seen in millions of homes around the country when it stars in a top BBC programme.

We were delighted to be involved in such a popular television programme and look forward to seeing the end result.
Commander Darren Houston, Commanding Officer

HMS Dragon will feature in the new series of BBC2’s Great British Railway Journeys, presented by former Defence Secretary Michael Portillo.

He spent several hours filming on board in Portsmouth Naval Base seeing preparations for the ship’s commissioning ceremony – marking its transition into front-line service – last Friday.

Mr Portillo served breakfast to some of the 190 crew, took part in the ship’s daily flag-raising ceremony known as ‘colours’ and interviewed the Commanding Officer, Commander Darren Houston, about the traditions of commissioning ceremonies.

Mr Portillo said: “It was great fun. I expected the food to be good quality and it was.

“And I expected the guys serving the food to be cheerful and they were.

“It was a hectic day but also a very enjoyable one.”

The programme involves the presenter travelling around the British railway network – using a Victorian guidebook – and compares current-day destinations with how they were in the nineteenth century.

Cdr Houston said: “We were delighted to be involved in such a popular television programme and look forward to seeing the end result.

“The day of commissioning is a hugely important day for the ship and ship’s company but having the film crew on board made it even more special.”

The episode featuring HMS Dragon will be broadcast early next year.
