It is also great to see more people now eating healthier and more members of the Ship‘s Company who would not normally go to the gym now becoming regular attendees.

HMS Portland’s Biggest Loser Competition 25/10/2011

Over a 10-week period prior to Summer Leave, HMS Portland set out to find the Biggest Loser. 45 personnel signed up to the challenge with each competitor’s height, weight and waist measurements being taken.

These measurements provided the individual with an overall health risk category IAW the Armed Forces Weight Management Policy (currently used as part of the RNFT Process) which was then taken on completion of the competition.

Progress was also monitored on a weekly basis with weekly weigh-ins so that everyone could see the clear progress they were making and proving that all of the hard work was worth it.

The introduction of the competition was felt by the Wholeship.  To support the a new focus was placed on healthy eating by the Exec Health Committee which resulted in healthier options at mealtimes along with guidance on portion size; all reinforcing the Biggest Loser campaign.

28 of the original 45 personnel were dedicated enough to see the competition through to its conclusion in week 10.

Together they lost a staggering 178 lbs in weight and 112cms from their waists.

All competitors successfully reduced their BCM; with 5 personnel losing so much weight that they also reduced their overall Health Risk Category – an excellent result.

But of course there could only be one winner and CH Sharman was the man to be crowned HMS Portland’s biggest loser having lost an impressive 21 lbs (a stone and a half).

CH Sam Sharman said,

“This competition has given me the motivation to shift my mid-rift and get myself back in shape for boxing.

"It is also great to see more people now eating healthier and more members of the Ship‘s Company who would not normally go to the gym now becoming regular attendees.”

As recognition for everyone’s hours of hard work, all personnel who took part also received a HMS Portland Biggest Loser T shirt, which was kindly funded by the Sports Lottery and the Ship’s Welfare Committee.
