Sussex URNU onboard RFA Mounts Bay

During the summer, some students from Sussex along with students from Southampton URNU had the opportunity to go to Bournemouth to be part of an amphibious exercise with the Marines and Territorial Army.

It was fantastic and certainly one of my highlights since joining the URNU. We stayed aboard RFA Mounts Bay for the duration of our visit and got involved with various parts of ship during the day.

These included working on communications on the bridge, working ashore on the recruiting stands, or being part of the team on the well deck which is a bit like a dock inside the hull on Mounts Bay where the landing craft are launched from.

My personal highlight of the exercise had to be the beach assault. This was a public demonstration of how the Marines operate with the TA and the Royal Navy. We were placed on Bournemouth beach and given the role of hostages who needed to be evacuated.

The Marines landed via landing craft and secured the area whilst the TA ensured all hostages were safely evacuated, again via landing craft. During this time, HMS Tyne was participating firing at a ‘rebel vessel’ and a RN Sea King was present.

As well as giving an authentic insight into how the different forces work in collaboration for the public, it was an exciting experience for all of us!
