Medical and Dental

Being in the Royal Navy can require you to move home quite often. Living in different areas, going overseas, or maybe just moving closer to your family when your partner is deployed involves a host of changes. Finding medical and dental cover as quickly as possible when moving home alone is very important.

Naval Families Federation

Firstly, if you ever have a medical emergency in the family - a son, daughter, mother, father, or other close relative taken ill, the Royal Navy through the Naval Personal and Family Service or Royal Marines Welfare will offer appropriate levels of support.

Finding a Doctor and Dentist in a new area...

If you have to move to a new area of the country then finding local community services is made easy by simply contacting the HIVE or by accessing NHS Direct

Trouble finding an NHS Dentist?

The Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Charles Montgomery,  has issued the following message to Service personnel and their families regarding access to NHS dentists.

“ The Naval Service is aware that there remains a perception that primary dental care is not available by the NHS in the wider community. However, the “perception lag” in the population is improving as NHS Direct is becoming better known.

In England and Wales patients may access NHS Direct or by calling 0845 4647 to find NHS dental care in their location.

Where NHS dentistry is recognised as being in limited supply, there are dental access centres available.

In Scotland, patients may access NHS24 or by calling 08454 242424.

Naval Service families who continue to meet with NHS dentistry access difficulties should report this through either the Divisional chain or by contacting the Naval Families Federation . This will enable accurate data recording and subsequent reporting to the Chief Dental Officer."
