What rights do me and my family have whilst in the UK?

For information on applications for an extension of stay, passport queries and any questions you may have regarding immigration and your rights whilst in the UK the UK Borders Agency is an ideal place to start.

Will the Royal Navy provide a home for my wife and children?

Yes, if they meet the criteria. Housing for Naval families is referred to as Service Families Accommodation (SFA) and is managed by Defence Estates (DE).

SFAs are allocated according to the size of your family. Royal Navy housing is grouped together in estates, but allocation is dependant on availability and therefore there may not always be other members of your ship on the same estate. There will be a monthly accommodation charge, which will depend on the type and grade of the house, its condition and access to local facilities, such as shops.

How do I arrange schooling for my children?

The Children’s Educational Advisory Service (CEAS) provides a dedicated service exclusively for Service Families supplying professional advice about all aspects associated with children’s education in the UK.

What Medical and Dental care is available?

Medical Care

As the Serving person, the Royal Navy will provide your medical care to meet your needs. Your spouse and children are entitled to medical care under the National Health Service (NHS) As soon as practical after your arrival in the UK, your spouse should register themselves and any children with a local doctor, commonly known as a General Practitioner (GP).

Dental Care

As with medical care, as the Serving person you will have your dental needs met by the Royal Navy.

Dental care for spouses and children can be provided for under the NHS, however due to high demand, NHS dental services are difficult to find. NHS Direct (0845 4647) can provide you with details of local dentists accepting NHS patients. In Scotland, you should access NHS24 (08454 242424)

Children are entitled to receive free dental care until they are 16. There will be an NHS dentist in your area that will be able to provide NHS dental care for your children.
