Saturday 6 June 2015

On Saturday 6 June 2015 the most spectacular event will take place at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, Hampshire when the establishment opens it gates for the annual Open Day, sponsored by 8 Wealth Management featuring the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) Field Gun Competition.

The Field Gun competition will feature crews from across the UK and as far afield as Gibraltar competing for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy. The competition is fast and furious and requires 18-man teams to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the gun in the shortest possible time, traditionally in heats of 6 crews at a time.S trength, stamina, and team work are essential in this challenge, and the crews begin the physical training this month, training with the guns in April.

During the Open Day there will be attractions, entertainment and displays designed to capture the imagination of everyone from 8 to 80. Attractions will include displays from the Royal Navy Raiders Parachute Display team, the Tigers Motorcycle Display Team, plus extensive recruitment zone with interactive activities and much more.

There will also be a Ship Open to Visitors area where you will be wowed with some of the training equipment used by today’s Navy. Plus experience Royal Navy training first hand in the Bridge Simulator which will allow you to simulate taking a ship into harbour.

The gates will open at 0930, there will be free parking, free buses from the local area and FREE FUN FAIR – all you need is to come along and join us for this amazing day, happy in the knowledge that once you pay your entrance free all attractions and entertainment is FREE!

This year the Royal Navy Amateur Radio Society (RNARS) will be streaming the event live over the internet at www.batc.tv.

Field Gun COmpetition

The most spectacular event at HMS Collingwood's open day is the the historic Royal Navy Field Gun Competition.

Crews representing units of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines as well as the British Army and Royal Air Force, will compete and as such the event is well supported by the senior ranks of all three Services.

Each crew of 18 highly disciplined, motivated, and physically fit field gunners, races to assemble an antique field gun and run with it, disassembling and reassembling as the competition requires, before dramatically dragging the gun home, maintaining the spirit of the Royal Navy’s contribution to the relief of Ladysmith.

History of the Brickwood Trophy

Brickwood, the Sunshine Brewers of Portsmouth, whose business in 1970 stretched from Sussex to Dorset and north towards London, was once a familiar name in the area.

Today the brewery is only a memory, although many pubs, especially in Portsmouth, have preserved their Brickwood frontages. But the name lives on with the annual Field Gun competition for the magnificent Brickwood Trophy, which dates back 100 years.

RM Band Collingwood

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood continues to make a significant contribution to the Naval Service and wider UK interests.

It provides musical support to commemorative events and veteran’s parades in London and throughout the South Coast.

It’s concerts raise funds for Service charities and it performs for events both on a national level and for local communities.

Big Noise Samba

Big Noise began in September 2007 when two samba players had a vision to form a community Samba Band in Gosport.

We began with the help of Gosport Carnival Factory, within one year we formed a committee and became self funded and have survived since! Our aim was to bring together like minded people who enjoy music and drumming.

Since the band began we have played at such a variety of gigs from local school fetes to Rhythm Tree Festival on the Isle of Wight.
