Standard Bursary

Bursaries are awarded to candidates who wish to join the Royal Navy after gaining a degree . Those gaining an award receive financial sponsorship in addition to a guaranteed place on Initial Officer Training after graduation. A standard bursary can be awarded to those candidates who wish to gain a degree before joining the Naval Services. Bursaries are awarded for most branches of the Service including Warfare, Aircrew, Logistics, Royal Marines and Engineering. Engineering bursaries are awarded for those engineering candidates who wish to attend universities not in the DTUS scheme.

To gain an award candidates must apply in the normal way and then attend the Admiralty Interview Board. Successful candidates are considered for an award based on their AIB performance. The standard award is for three years although candidates with only 1 year to graduation can also apply. Candidates whose courses last for 4 years may be given a 4 year award.

All degree courses must be for a first degree and take place in a UK degree awarding establishment. Overseas courses will not be considered except for UK based courses which included an overseas year. Candidates who gain a bursary are managed by the University office at BRNC or POC office for RM. They receive £1500 per annum in sponsorship( £4000 for Engineering bursars) and are expected to join Initial Officer training on graduation. During their sponsorship they are expected to take place in organized activities and courses during vacation periods.
