DTUS

DTUS, the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme, is a quad-service sponsorship scheme to provide graduate engineering officer recruits to the Royal Navy, Army and the Royal Air Force as well as the Defence Engineering Support Group of the Civil Service.

The Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme is part of the Defence Technical Officer Engineering Entry Scheme (DTOEES), the other part being Welbeck the Defence Sixth Form College.

The DTUS Scheme is supported by 4 Support Units based at Southampton, Loughborough, Aston and Newcastle universities with members studying in the above locations as well as Northumbria, Birmingham and Southampton Solent universities. Each Support Unit is manned by Service personnel of all three armed services and provides professional and adventurous training activities as well as support. The Commanding Officer of each unit is an Engineering branch officer and also a member of the university engineering faculty.

Students join the scheme either from Welbeck or as direct applicants. They must read for an appropriate engineering degree and in return they receive sponsorship of £4000 per annum and a guaranteed place as an engineering entrant to their chosen service on graduation. Whilst at university they join the Reserve Forces and receive training pay for attendance at regular training nights and for the many activities they undertake during weekends and vacation periods. They are also encouraged to develop a Service ethos by taking part in the many social activities centered on the support unit mess.
