Before and During University

Opportunities exist for candidates to express an interest in joining the Naval Services at anytime before or whilst at university through the 1 and 2 year Sponsorship Scheme for those at school and by membership of the University Royal Naval Units whilst at university.

Candidates still at school can apply to join the Royal Navy through the 1 and 2 year Scholarship Schemes.

Candidates preparing to enter the Sixth Form can apply for a 2 year scholarship – candidates apply through their Careers Office and then attend the Admiralty Interview Board(AIB). Successful candidates are considered for an award based on their performance. Those candidates already in the Lower VI year can apply for a 1 year scholarship which provides sponsorship for the final VI form year only. All sponsorship awards include a guaranteed Naval College entry place to join BRNC after completing school ( Direct Entry place at CTCRM for RM candidates) however there is the opportunity for candidates to attend university.

1 Year Scholarship holders can apply for a university bursary using their Scholarship AIB score.Two year scholarship candidates who wish to attend university must return to AIB to reboard. Scholarship holders who take up their Naval College entry place will receive a bonus Scholarship payment. There is also the opportunity for non engineering candidates to attend the Defence Sixth Form College ( Welbeck) before starting Initial Officer Training. University students have the opportunity to join one of numerous University Royal Naval Units (URNUs) located throughout the UK.

Each unit provides sea training in their own tender as well as varied military and adventurous training opportunities during vacations. URNU members are members of the Royal Naval Reserve and receive training pay whilst on duty. They have no commitment to join the Naval Services on leaving university but do gain valuable experience should they choose to join at a later date.
