Royal Navy Recruitment Process

Once you've decided that you're interested in a career in the Royal Navy, it's time to begin the formal recruitment process. The Recruitment process might seem a bit involved, but that's because we want you to be absolutely sure it's the right decision for you.

8 steps to become A part of the Royal Navy

  • 1 Get in touch

    Call 08456 07 55 55

You'll be asked a few basic questions to check you're eligible to apply. Or you can fill in the short form online.

  • 2 Meet us

We'll book you a place for an initial careers presentation (ICP) at a careers office near you, where you'll learn more about us and the job options open to you.

  • 3 Find out more

After the Initial Careers Presentation (ICP), you'll have a chance to ask any questions you have with the Careers Adviser. You'll then fill in a short application form. At this point, you're still not committed to joining the Royal Navy.

  • 4 Show us what you've got

We'll then arrange a recruit test (RT) for you which covers basic English and maths, problem solving and an understanding of mechanics. You should also start thinking about which job you want to do.

  • 5 Your way ahead

Once we have your RT results and qualifications we will then discuss your most suitable route into the Royal Navy. If you don't pass first time, don't worry as you can take it again. Your careers Adviser can tell you what the timescales are likely to be.

  • 6 Fit to Join

You'll need to take a medical, an eye test and pre-joining fitness test. Make sure you get yourself in shape to both pass the test and prepare for basic training. Form some jobs you will have to take extra aptitude tests.  You'll then have a short interview at a careers office. If we feel you have the potential to train as an officer, you'll enter the selection process, which ends in the Admiralty Interview Board (AIB).

  • 7 Training

When you pass our recruit test, fitness test, medical and interview; you will need to attend a four-day induction course called the Pr-Royal Navy Course (Rating).  This will allow you to sample life in the Service and confirm that you are ready for entry by passing a test of your running and swimming.  You must pass these test to confirm you are ready to the enter the the Royal Navy but equally, it is an opportunity for you to experience life in the Royal Navy and be sure that it is the career for you.  The next step to joining Raleigh.

  • 8 Time to get started

Once you’ve passed all the tests then we will make you a formal job offer. As soon as a place becomes available, you'll start your basic training at Raleigh or Dartmouth.
