Stonehouse Wing is the rehabilitation and remedial unit for Phase 1 recruits who need to recover from injury or illness. It is a small division within the Initial Naval Training (INT) department, following a separate program while continuing to support the aims, training and ethos of INT.
Stonehouse
Stonehouse Division is named after the Royal Naval Hospital Stonehouse, the first dedicated Royal Navy Hospital, opened in Plymouth in 1762.
Rehabilitation at Stonehouse Division is individually tailored and facilitated by the combined effort of Remedial Instructors (physiotherapists), Physical Trainers and Medical staff. As well as experienced Medical Officers, HMS Raleigh boasts a civilian Physiotherapist who is based within the establishment, and a dedicated Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor (ERI) for expert advice on health and fitness, so educating and empowering individuals to assist in their own recovery.
Every effort is made to best prepare the rehabilitating Recruit for a return to training. Whilst in Stonehouse Wing, as well as physical rehabilitation, recruits are given the opportunity to develop themselves through education courses or working towards Naval General Training (NGT) exams. Additionally, opportunities are taken to visit RN establishments to broaden awareness of the Service and to maintain motivation and ambition.
Needless to say, whatever stage of training reached by the individual prior to injury, those lessons already learned are reiterated within Stonehouse Wing. Accommodation and routines are maintained, as far as practicable, in line with Phase 1. Standards of Dress, Military Bearing and Personal Organisation are maintained and improved upon. Kit inspections are a regular occurrence, and many NGT lessons are revisited or expanded upon. Recovering Recruits also research, prepare and deliver presentations and debates on a wide range of topics connected to the Armed Forces in order to develop communication skills and confidence.
Divisional care is administered by Phase 1 staff and comprises a Divisional Officer, a Divisional Senior Rate and a Leading Hand, all of whom are experienced Divisional Staff from within INT.
