Your Career Path

Promotion in the Royal Navy is decided on merit alone. Depending on what qualifications you have or the job you choose, you’ll join the Royal Navy as a rating or an officer. Once you’ve joined, your progression up the ranks will depend entirely on your own commitment and achievements. Your career will be in your hands.

Your career as an officer:

Officers are our management team. You’ll provide leadership and make decisions that will help fulfil the varied roles of the Royal Navy. You’ll also be responsible for the training and development, welfare, morale and, ultimately, lives of the people under your command.

Your career as a rating:

Ratings are our specially trained personnel, fully prepared and ready for jobs that need doing anywhere in the world. As you develop new skills and trades, you’ll be eligible for promotion and the pay rise that goes with it.
