As a Royal Marines Officer, you’ll be in charge of extremely motivated and highly trained men. You’ll be responsible for their development, welfare, morale, training and, ultimately, their lives.
Officer
Second Lieutenant:
You’ll be at this rank until you’ve finished training, which includes a year as a Troop Commander in an operational unit.
Lieutenant:
You’ll be commissioned into this rank if you start training as a direct entry officer before you’re 21.
Captain:
As a Captain, you could be a Senior Troop Commander or an Adjutant in a commando unit.
Major:
As a Major, you could progress to the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC), and to your first staff appointment, possibly commanding a Close Combat Company.
Lieutenant Colonel:
Now you’re a senior member of the Royal Marines, on the staff or in command of 40, 42 or 45 Commando.
Colonel:
As a Colonel, you could serve as a Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, Deputy Commander of 3 Commando Brigade (the main combat formation of the Royal Marines) or be in charge of a commando unit.
Brigadier:
You’ll now be in a very senior position on the staff or at the MOD. You could also be given overall command of 3 Commando Brigade.
Major General:
The professional head of the Royal Marines: our highest rank.
