School of Music
Learning from the best:
Before you join one of the five bands, you’ll complete one of the world’s most demanding and rewarding musical educations at the Royal Marines School of Music (RMSoM). You’ll be taught by civilian professors who’ve played with the top orchestras, as well as our own instructors with huge amounts of experience.
Harmony and music theory:
Alongside your instrumental lessons, you’ll take classes in harmony, music theory, history of music and aural training. To help you with your studies, you’ll be provided with your own individual practice room for the duration of your training, specific training aids and the RMSoM Research Centre. This has a vast collection of books and CDs, with listening facilities.
Aiming higher:
All the musical training you receive will earn you recognised civilian qualifications. Through our partnership with the University of Portsmouth, as a Musician you’ll be eligible to register on a BMus (Hons) degree course. This is fully funded by the Royal Marines Band Service, so you won’t have to pay tuition fees, and you’ll be earning while you study.
Exclusive partnership:
As a Bugler, you’ll be able to gain diplomas from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in bugle, snare drum and herald trumpet, through an exclusive partnership with the RMSoM.
Further opportunities:
The qualifications you gain will also stand you in excellent stead if you decide to continue your musical career after you leave the Royal Marines Band Service, opening up opportunities whichever musical direction you choose.
Returning to the RMSoM:
Throughout your career there will be opportunities to return to the RMSoM for higher training courses, and to prepare for further responsibility and promotion. Does this sound good to you?
