Unlike the Royal Marines or the Royal Navy, we don’t take direct entry officers. All our officers are promoted from the ranks: this is the only way we can be sure you have the unique combination of musicianship and leadership skills that the job needs. Even our most senior officer, the Principal Director of Music, started out the same way you will, as a Musician (known as an M3).
Officer
Lieutenant:
As a Lieutenant, you’ll be a Director of Music while you’re also completing your officer training.
Captain :
Once you reach the rank of Captain, you’ll be a fully qualified Director of Music.

As a Major, you could be a Senior Director of Music Training at the RMSoM (Royal Marines School of Music), or a Staff Officer in the Band Service.
Lieutenant Colonel:
You’re now the Principal Director of Music and the most senior rank in the Royal Marines Band Service.
Can you see yourself as an officer in the Royal Marines Band Service?
