Today's band service is a unique blend of versatility, talent and tradition, which also has an important medical and military role to provide to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Being a Royal Marines musician is both physically and professionally demanding but, whether it's playing Mozart or firing an SA80 rifle, the training is unbeatable and the rewards immense.
Working Across the Service
As a member of the RMBS, your role is to represent the Royal Navy and Royal Marines around the world – communicating the message that the Royal Navy and Royal Marines is a team at the very top of its abilities. Our musical skill and professionalism send a clear message: we are a superbly trained, flexible, fit and hardworking unit.
Throughout the year, you will perform many kinds of music for all kinds of audiences – from Royal Navy colleagues to huge international crowds. Your audiences may well include the Royal family and visiting VIPs. Life ‘on the road’ means a constant stream of performances, rehearsals, radio recording sessions and appearances on television and radio. There are plenty of rewards in return for your hard work and commitment.
The RMBS supports the Royal Navy and Royal Marines on official duties in the UK and abroad. You can be impressing audiences in the USA, the Far East, Europe… almost anywhere the Royal Navy or Royal Marines serve. It is great experience for a young musician; your band’s live and studio CDs sell all over the world.
Combat support:
The Royal Marines is a 21st century force, ready to face ever changing challenges in the world. The RMBS forms an important part of that response. Our secondary role is as part of the Medical Branch. We serve as casualty handlers on hospital ships. We supported 3 Commando Brigade in Kosovo and worked as decontamination teams in the Gulf. In war, or in humanitarian campaigns in flood, famine, earthquake or man-made disaster zones, we exchange our blue uniforms for camouflage and go into action. All RMBS members are fully trained to fulfil this medical role and it is a vital part of signing up.
