Just like the regular Corps, everyone starts out as a General Duties Marine. Once you’ve built up some experience, you’ll have the chance to train for one of the Commando specialist jobs. Your particular career path will depend on the needs of the service, plus any previous military experience and existing specialist skills you may have.
Commando Specialisations
Assault Engineer:
Assault Engineers build bridges, field defense’s, obstacles and other structures used in commando operations. You’ll also be trained in mine warfare, demolition and using explosives.
Civil Military Co-operation (CIMIC):
You’ll be trained to work with the civil community in areas of conflict to gain their trust and understanding to promote regeneration and help return the area to stability.
Drill Leader:
You’ll have a crucial role in turning new recruits into fully-trained Commandos. You’ll also be responsible for ceremonial drill on state and other occasions.
Driver:
You’ll be trained on a range of vehicles, such as Land Rovers, heavy support vehicles and the fast, agile Viking armored vehicle.
General Purpose Machine Gun Sustained Fire (GPMG SF):
The GPMG is a portable, fully-automatic machine gun, which you’ll be trained to use in a two-man team to protect your oppos in defensive positions and support them during attacks with sustained, rapid fire.
Heavy Weapons Anti-Tank:
You’ll identify enemy tanks and other armored vehicles and use the Javelin anti-tank missile system to put them out of action. The Javelin can also be used as a ‘bunker buster’ to clear heavily fortified buildings.
Heavy Machine Gun (HMG):
You’ll handle and fire this formidable weapon which can be carried by hand or mounted on a vehicle and can hit targets at a distance of up to 4.5 kilometers.
Heavy Weapons Mortar:
You’ll learn how to operate these vital weapons and accurately direct fire onto targets up to 6 kilometers away.
Landing Craft:
To transport Royal Marines from ship to shore, you’ll drive small high-speed raiding craft such as rigid raiders, inflatable raiding craft and the new offshore raiding craft.
Physical Training (PT) Instructor:
You’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining military physical fitness.
Reconnaissance Operator:
Your job is to find out where and how strong the enemy is. You’ll be trained in climbing and cliff-assault techniques.
Skills at Arms Instructor:
Your job is to train personnel in using small arms safely and efficiently on the range and in the field.
Sniper:
You’ll be an outstanding long-range marksman and one of a two-man team operating from concealed positions and often separated from the rest of your unit.
Swimmer Canoeist:
You’ll need to pass the UK Special Forces Selection Course to become a member of the Special Boat Service (SBS).
