As a Royal Marines Reservist you’ll be trained to the same high standards to do the same job as a regular Royal Marine. In fact roughly 10% of the Royal Marines Reserve are currently serving on long-term detachments in regular Royal Marines units.
Training and Education
The basic commando course is one of the world’s longest, toughest military training courses. It’s divided into three phases.
Phase-One: Individual Skills Training:
This initial phase will usually last six to eight months. During this time, you’ll need to put in seven training weekends, plus one training evening a week. The final session is a two-week long course at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM). This phase covers basic fieldcraft, navigation, weapon training and physical training.
Phase-Two: Tactical Training and the Commando Course:
This phase also lasts six to eight months. During this time you’ll be asked to complete eight training weekends and one training evening a week. This phase ends with the two-week commando course at CTCRM, when you’ll undertake battle physical training (BPT), the four-day field exercise and carry out the four commando tests: the endurance course, the nine mile speed march, the Tarzan assault course, and the 30-mile march. If you successfully complete these tests, you earn the right to wear the green beret.
Phase-Three: Field Firing and Amphibious Training:
This consists of a two-week live firing course which ends in a live-firing troop attack on Dartmoor and a weekend of amphibious training.
Further Training:
All kinds of further training options are available, such as jungle, mountain and cold-weather warfare. Once you’ve gained some experience, you’ll have the opportunity to train for one of the wide range of specialist jobs available.
