RMBS Recruitment Process

Once you've decided that you're interested in a career in the Royal Marines Band Service, it's time to begin the formal recruitment process.

8 steps to join the royal Marines Band Service

  • 1 Get in touch

If you haven’t done this already, please fill in the short form online or call us on 08456 0014 44.

  • 2 Meet us

We'll book you a place for an initial careers presentation (ICP) at a careers office near you.

  • 3 Find out more

After the ICP you'll have a chance to ask any questions you have with the Careers Adviser. You'll then fill in a short application form.

  • 4 Show us what you've got

We'll then arrange a recruit test (RT) for you which covers basic English and maths, problem solving and an understanding of mechanics. You can try some examples at Royalnavy.mod.uk/careers before doing it for real.

  • 5 Your way ahead

Once we have your RT results and qualifications we will then discuss your most suitable route into the Royal Marines. If you don't pass first time, you'll be asked to take it again. Your careers Adviser can tell you what the timescales are likely to be.

  • 6 Fit to Join

You'll need to take a medical, an eye test and pre-joining fitness test. You’ll then have a short interview at the careers office.

  • 7 Training

We will put your musical ability and potential, plus your stamina, determination and character, to the test during your audition, held over five days at the RMSoM. It includes physical tests in the gym, a timed 1.5 mile run, a swimming assessment and a bleep test. You'll take a 40-minute aural test and then play a solo piece on each of your instruments, plus additional instruments if necessary. You'll have an interview with the Director of Music Training, a Staff Officer, the Chief Instructor and Bugle Major. Remember, the audition is a two-way process, in which we aim to show you what life in the Royal Marines Band Service has to offer. You'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions, meet current trainees and even sit in on the band's evening rehearsals. .

  • 8 Time to get started

When you've passed the various tests, we'll make you a formal job offer. As soon as a place becomes available, you'll begin your basic training.
